Younger Women's Cancer Support Group

ACT & Surrounding Region (YWCSG)

Info Sessions & Events

Unfortunately due to rapidly evolving COVID situation and the risk on more vulnerable members in the group/community, we have temporarily put a hold on any events, information sessions and attendance at markets etc.

PATIENT CENTRAL AWARD:

In the Canberra region, we are really fortunate to have the the Cancer Rapid Assessment Unit (CRAU) at Canberra Hospital that provides a vital service allowing cancer patients to quickly access the urgent care they need, instead of having to attend the Emergency Department.

This year they have put in an application for the Patient Central Award where the winner receives $10,000 towards a project that improves cancer patients’ care and quality of life.

The CRAU is one of two finalists for the award and if successful will put the prize money towards a high-tech ultrasound probe. The probe will save time, as the team will be able to deal with malignant fluid build-up in some patients with cancer that would otherwise mean a trip to hospital.

This will ultimately help improve the patient journey and experience - allowing individuals more quality time at home with their families and loved ones.

The team with the most votes wins! Voting closes September 30, and you can show them your support by voting here. 👇

NEW ONLINE GROUP:

Partner support and the effect on partners - A topic of conversation which is discussed at length in many forums! Relationships are challenged by cancer with the unknowns, distress, fear and feeling isolated.

We have setup a YWCSG sprout group for the partners of our members to join to better support them when they too are faced with the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

The support provided by a partner can affect how they cope with the diagnosis. Partners of YWCSG has been created to support the partners of these younger women.

A relationship can be challenged by a cancer diagnosis and may be because of several factors like an uncertain future, financial worries, and feeling isolated.
Partners can also have levels of distress similar to or greater than those of the person with cancer, and as a result partners may feel depressed and anxious.
This group has been created to help partners, so you can help each other through any anxieties, sadness and uncertainty, and support so relationships may become stronger.

If you meet the membership criteria and would like to join our group, we welcome all those who need our support and friendship with open arms. Please send us a Join Group request:

CANTEEN

Canteen and Camp Quality are working together to support parents impacted by cancer. Find out more at www.parentingthroughcancer.org.au.

Counselling for parents with children of all ages is available now – call 1800 945 215 or email parentingthroughcancer@canteen.org.au.

Parents are provided with 4 to 6 free counselling sessions focused on family communication, collective grief, resilience, the wellbeing of parents and children and parenting through cancer.

Canteen’s online parent community is now also available to parents with children of all ages (0-25) so they can connect with others experiencing the challenge of cancer in the family through discussions and private messaging while also accessing helpful resources.

Research shows that if we support parents through cancer, their children experience much lower levels of distress.

Please call 1800 945 215 or email parentingthroughcancer@canteen.org.au if you need support or have any questions.

YWCSG MARKET INFORMATION STALLS

THE MARKET @ BUNGENDORE - Sunday 13 June 2021

We had our first information stalls at the Tuggeranong Lake Mother's Day Walk & Markets (9 May 2021), Queanbeyan Market on 16 May 2021, and then the Braidwood Market on 22 May 2021. All have been great opportunities to let people know in the ACT Region about us, and connect in with other groups.

We're going to have this information stall at future markets around the Canberra region with raffle tickets, the YWCSG Bears, Fluffy Crunch gourmet Fairy Floss and Ceramic Paint Kits available for purchase. Donations are also extremely appreciated! If you’re around and see us at any of these markets, please drop by and say hi!

All proceeds will go towards providing support to younger women in the ACT region affected by a cancer diagnosis, hosting information sessions events, and other activities that provide continual support and connection. 💖🌻
